Press Release from www.cjmorgan.com News Release March 18, 2004 For Immediate Release Contact Person: Catherine Jo Morgan, info@cjmorgan.com, 706-754-3812 "Ten Years of Experimentation Pay Off for Local Metal Sculptor"Ten years ago, local metal sculptor Catherine Jo Morgan was known for her openwork iron bowls. Then her work disappeared from local art exhibits. Now she’s back with a completely different kind of art. She calls these "bowl sculptures" because they’re more than simple bowls. The new series is called "Energy Harmonizers." Each sculpture harmonizes paper and iron. Morgan says this was her greatest challenge. The two materials have completely different qualities. Yet she says this is what attracted her to the idea. "You could say that iron carries the energy of Mars, while paper is like Venus. So harmonizing these two materials in one bowl sculpture is like harmonizing men and women. Human beings have been working on this for a long time!" Morgan says this puts her ten years of work in perspective. Sometimes she did get discouraged by how long it was taking. And she did a lot of what technical research and experimentation to make sure her finishes were not only durable, but as healthy and safe as possible. "I found out more about the chemicals in finishes, than I’d really wanted to know," she says. "Then I made my own tests to compare how the safest finishes worked on steel." That was only the beginning. Morgan found that copper mesh made an ideal "mediator" between paper and iron. Copper mesh needed its own protective finishes. Then there was the matter of joining the sculpture pieces together. Welding works fine with iron, but not for joining iron with paper. "Also I wanted to make these pieces so they could last for generations. So the joinings need to be renewable so the iron and paper could be refinished separately when need be." Morgan says she’ll spare everyone the details of her experiments. She just wants to share the results now. "Luckily I love to work with a sense of discovery and wonder. So the experimentation has been a pleasure to me. Now I’m moving forward, making more in this series. Each piece is completely different, so I’m still working with a sense of wonder." Three of the new "Energy Harmonizers" will be in exhibit from March 20 till June 5, 2004 at the Center Gallery in Sautee. The opening reception is March 20, 6:30 - 8 p.m. You can preview Morgan’s work at her new website, www.cjmorgan.com. ###
