Care Suggestions - Mixed Media Sculptures

bead detail from Take Heart vessel sculpturePlacement

Of course, it’s your enjoyment of the sculpture that matters most. So it’s up to you where you place it. With that in mind, here are some suggestions.

Like most artworks, these sculptures are best displayed out of direct sunlight. Moderate temperatures and humidity will give them the longest life. I’ve used archival materials and methods, including acrylic paints with the highest ratings for lightfastness. Still, everything will last longer if temperature, humidity, and light are controlled.

Cleaning

Dust tends to build up on acrylic paint, even when the painted surface is varnished and waxed. So to minimize dusting, you may want to place the sculpture in a glass or acrylic display. If you’d rather have it out in the open for more sense of intimacy and drama, you can dust it easily with an antistatic duster. The kind that’s like a feather duster, but made of long, soft antistatic synthetic fibers, works well.

A damp cloth may be used to wipe painted surfaces. A dry cleaning pad like the kind used on wallpaper, may be used gently on paper. The gemstone spheres may be washed or cleaned with glass cleaner.

Restoration

These sculptures are constructed so it’s possible to disassemble them if part needs to be repainted or refinished. If such a need occurs, please contact me for assistance. I’ll be glad to restore my sculptures at a reasonable fee.
